This is Week 21 of the CSA Season.  Three more weeks to go!

Farm News

An update on the broccoli from Detweiler Farm:  We have used an organic-approved pesticide on the broccoli crops, and between that and the cooler weather, the striped cabbage worm has slowed its damage.  We hope that you were happier with the more recent broccoli.  The worms didn't hurt the kohlrabi, though!  Did you see the giant kohlrabi in the Choice box today??  If you need recipes, check out our kohlrabi board on Pinterest.

Glacial Till Farm

Garlic prep has begun! I’m putting 1200 in this year. It smells so good.

My first trials of salanova lettuce! Someday I think I’ll have high tunnels full of this lettuce for winter production.

Grateful Life Farm

This week we have seen a sharp decline in egg production, as many of the birds shed their feathers and grow new ones for winter, and the daylight hours diminish.  Eggs will be in short supply from now until late February/early March when the day length encourages them to lay lots of spring eggs.  Each year as our hens get older and their egg production drops off, we raise a group of new birds who will eventually replace the older ones.

This summer we started a group of Buff Orpingtons and last week we decided they were big enough to join the flock.  We moved them into the coop, and we’ve been working to make sure they are getting their turn at the feeder, going in at night, and getting roost space.

Although some chicken keepers recommend introducing chickens more gradually, using temporary fences to keep them separated but visible to one another, we have fortunately never had much problem with introducing new birds.  Chickens can be violent towards other chickens, especially when their group social structure changes, but we’ve found that our system allows enough room for chickens to simply run away from each other when needed, and we’ve fortunately never experienced chickens injuring others.  These young hens are very friendly!
